Daniel 9:3 tells us, “And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes.” Daniel was well aware of the condition of Israel. God would give him a vision of the destruction of Jerusalem. His response would be one of brokenness and confession. He understood that the one he must turn to was God. Thus, he pursued God with fasting and in sackcloth and ashes, a position of complete surrender and dependence. The disciples would question how Jesus Christ would cast out a demon when they had no power to do so. In Mark 9:29, “And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.” Real power to face and stand against the demonic influences in this world requires of us to go to God through prayer and fasting, fleeing to God in an attitude of desperation. Philippians 4:6 says “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Anxiety and distress are removed as we dwell in the shadow of the almighty in prayer. Strength is experienced as we are grafted into the power of God through prayer. Real joy is birthed by the presence of God in prayer.
A.W. Tozer states: "I do not advise that we end the year on a somber note. The march, not the dirge, has ever been the music of Christianity. If we are good students in the school of life, there is much that the years have to teach us. But the Christian is more than a student, more than a philosopher. He is a believer, and the object of his faith makes the difference, the mighty difference. Of all persons, the Christian should be best prepared for whatever the New Year brings. He has dealt with life at its source. In Christ, he has disposed of a thousand enemies that other men must face alone and unprepared. He can face his tomorrow cheerful and unafraid because yesterday he turned his feet into the ways of peace and today he lives in God. The man who has made God his dwelling place will always have a safe habitation."
Matthew 11:29 - "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls."
The old hymn writer had a clear understanding of the peace the Christian experiences through their faith in Jesus Christ. We can truly sing: "My faith has found a resting place, not in device nor creed. I trust the ever living One, His wounds for me shall plead. I need no other argument. I need no other plea. It is enough that Jesus died; and that He died for me."
